I only worked at one farm last week because Andrew & I were meant to be spending 3 days up north in Coventry, so this week I had FIVE farms to visit, two were ES (essential sampling) farms which meant I only had to visit them once, the other three I had to visit twice. One of the ES farms alternates from an evening milking one month to a morning milking the next month. So I had to be up at 4am yesterday, to get ready (I am so not a morning person) and drive in the dark to a farm I had only been to once before. And yes, I got lost. Well, not lost, I just missed the road I was supposed to turn down. Which meant I drove probably another two miles before I knew I'd gone too far. The joys of country living in the UK. Not all roads are signposted, and even if they are, the road doesn't always have a name.
Anyway, long story short is that I have survived my busiest week so far. It feels good, I feel like I have achieved alot, but I am so tired now!
Andrew has been following a job lead from the cattle show in Coventry and he is really keen to try something different, rather than being a herdsman. I have encouraged him for a long time now get away from just milking cows and pursue his real passion which is cattle genetics. This job will require him to visit farms and sell new genetics to the farmers and help them to improve the standard of their herds. I think it will suit Andrew so much because he loves to talk about cows. So a change of direction in his career also means a change of address. I have the responsibility of searching for potential properties for us to live, but closer to Frome.
Here are a few links to my favourites so far, I hope they work, but if you are in Aus they may not:
Alfred Street this place is not my ideal as it is an apartment, but if we don't like anything else this could be all that we can afford. I like the size of the windows and the rooms.
Kingfisher Drive price-wise it's good, seems to be a good standard of house but nothing remarkable about it except the street name, kitchen looks good if small
LET AGREED :( period home, Westbury love the garden, the kitchen and the period features, rooms look like they are in good proportion too. Looks shabby at the front of the house but not going to let that deter me. As long as the place is in good nic.
Richmond Road downside is that it is in the middle of town, but I love the proportion of the rooms and the kitchen looks great. Tiny backyard though :-(
1 BR cottage downside is that it is only a 1BR place, but it has alot of character and seems airy and light
Green Parlour, Radstock this one is out of town (good), but not enough pics to really know if it's right for us. Description of the house sounds promising.
Southfields, Frome we like this one moreso for its location. Ok on the inside
LET AGREED :(Barn conversion, Rode looks quaint but only has one bedroom, which is no good if we have guests come to stay
There are a couple more to link but I'm struggling to keep my eyes open so I will get those up later.

Coming from the land of the brick veneer 3 bed 1 bath, they all look gorgeous (except for the unit)
Nice to have 2 bedrooms, but if you have to get a 1 bedroom for whatever reason, don't worry about any guests, we/they will sort themselves out! It's a bonus not expected honey :)
We can always put a tent up in your backyard lol :)
So happy for you both that Andrew has that opportunity, will it mean you need to look for something new?
While a PIA perhaps not the worst thing, maybe more normal hours for you so you can sleep in ;) hehe
I am always looking out for something new, but if I can't find anything to begin with I can always do milk sampling as they are so understaffed. Only issue with that is that we'd need to buy a 2nd car because Andrew will be using the one we already have :( I may not be able to work for a while until we save the money for another car.
would they give him a car allowance or company car or similar? If he's out on the road, it would be standard I would have thought, either/or is standard here. :(
No allowance or company car as he will be self employed. At least he can claim his mileage, fuel etc on tax
he should be able to claim depreciation on the car, but then again I'm thinking in Aussie tax law, whoops!
Pretty much any expense he can claim I would have thought, including home office space etc, though again that's aussie tax rules.... ;)
Umm... well I realy dislike the block of apartments, so depressing. The last one bedroom place looks a bit pokey so all in all I think the 2 bedders are the way to go if the money stretches. And this is said by a person who is highly unlikely to step on uk soil in the next few years. The other one bedder looked better but I wonder if the pikkies enhance it and the reality falls short.
What about 'bond' - do they want an arm and a leg for that? Could you get a car on minimal deposit and use all of your income on paying it off until that is done? P
yeah, in theory he should be able to claim all that but we don't know for sure yet. Funny thing is he'll have to wear a shirt and tie :D
Hi Pam! They do want a bond, I think a month in advance is the norm here. Andrew's employer (well, I say employer but he will actually be self employed) said he would pay for our first 3 months' rent but we'd have to make some arrangement to pay him back, so we might be able to get a small loan from the bank to get a car and combine some small debts etc
I'm not keen on the apartment idea, that is a last resort, but if we do go for an apartment we'll go for the nicest one we can :D
Some of the pics are quite deceiving, I can tell they've stretched them to make the rooms appear bigger. So we will have to visit the houses and see for ourselves :)
